In the interview with a defence and security online magazine, Dr Kashala commented on President of the Republic Joseph Kabila’s suggestion to create a government of national unity. Dr Kashala said: “We need to consolidate the cohesion of the nation. The government will need to bring together all the different components that make up Congolese society, and assign them clear targets for the remainder of the mandate of the President of the Republic. (…) All political actors, including the President of the National Assembly, agree that the Constitution has to be respected, especially article 220 [which regulates the mandate of the President of the Republic, ed]. The DRC in its current situation needs more men and women whose leadership has been asserted.”

On the continuing violence in the Eastern DRC, Dr Kashala continued: “We are encouraged by the recent improvement in the security situation in the east of the country. UREC is a political party that does not believe in the virtues of war. It advocates peace, national integrity and the peaceful cohabitation of peoples. Recent military victories against the M23 rebellion do not mean the war itself has come to an end. We need to establish a permanent political dialogue between the Congolese communities in all the provinces where there is instability at present. At the same time we need to strengthen our national armed forces. The usage of force would be the ultimate means to bring peace.”
